KEF Q8 Meta Dolby Atmos Up-Firing Height Speakers — Pair (Black)
Product description
Dolby Atmos height channels are enabled by an angled, up‑firing design that projects height information toward the ceiling so reflections create three‑dimensional effects. These speakers are intended to sit on top of bookshelf or tower speakers, bringing elevation channels to a system without any ceiling installation.
Each unit doubles as a conventional surround or rear speaker when wall‑mounted, so the Q8 Meta can be configured either as an up‑firing height module or a direct‑radiating surround. That flexibility supports 5.1.2, 5.1.4 and larger Dolby Atmos configurations depending on your layout.
At the heart of the Q8 Meta is a 5.25" 12th‑generation Uni‑Q point‑source driver array featuring METAMATERIAL Absorption Technology (MAT). MAT is engineered to absorb unwanted rear‑firing tweeter diffraction, improving clarity and helping the speaker steer effects with precision and natural imaging.
The enclosure is a sealed, closed‑box design that maintains tight, controlled output regardless of placement. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms and recommended amplifier power is 10–150 W. The Q8 Meta is timbre‑matched to the Q Series Meta towers, bookshelf and centre speakers so sound blends smoothly around the room. Units are sold as a pair and are available in Satin Black, Satin White or Walnut; an integrated wall‑mount enables fixed installation or the option to place them on top of existing speakers for temporary or permanent setups.
Pros
- Effective Atmos height without ceiling installation
- 12th‑gen Uni‑Q with MAT reduces unwanted diffraction
- Can be shelf‑placed or wall‑mounted for flexible setup
Cons
- Best performance depends on room geometry and ceiling height
- 4 Ω nominal load requires a compatible amplifier
- May benefit from higher placement for optimum overhead effects
VerdictThese Q8 Meta modules are an effective and versatile way to introduce Atmos height effects without rewiring ceilings. The 12th‑gen Uni‑Q driver with MAT controls tweeter diffraction for accurate steering of overhead cues, while the sealed cabinet keeps bass and midrange controlled. They work well as both shelf‑top up‑firing units and as wall‑mounted direct radiators, making them a sensible choice

If you're debating Atmos, try these — mount later if needed
Performance is room dependent, but these are ideal if you can’t fit ceiling speakers. They sit securely on top of towers (anti‑vibration pads help) and calibrate normally with Audyssey — check distances and dB on your receiver. In my 7'8" room they opened the soundstage dramatically; switching them off leaves a clear gap. Mounting them higher would give a more distinct overhead, diffused effect.

Impressive delivery and sound
Arrived fast and well packed. Sound quality is very good — I liked them enough to buy two more to finish my surround system.
