Amicool Slim External DVD/CD Drive — USB 3.0 & USB‑C Portable Optical Drive
Product description
Plug-and-play convenience: Connect the drive to a computer’s USB or Type‑C port and it is normally recognized without extra drivers. For steady operation and full power delivery, attach it directly to a computer port (desktop users should prefer a rear motherboard USB socket) and avoid passive hubs or long extension cables.
Dual-interface, fast transfer: The drive offers both USB 3.0 and USB‑C connectors and supports data signalling up to 5 Gbps when connected to compatible ports. It reads and writes common disc types including DVD+R, DVD‑R, CD‑R and CD‑RW; it does not support DVD‑RAM or Blu‑ray (BD) discs and some proprietary formats. Typical maximum speeds are about 8x for DVDs and up to 24x for CDs when conditions allow.
Compatibility notes: Works with Windows 11/10/8.1/7, Linux and macOS on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac and Mac mini. It is designed for computers and is not compatible with phones, tablets, streaming boxes, TVs, game consoles or in‑car players. Mac users should insert the disc before connecting the drive and, on M1/M2/M3 systems, consider a powered USB‑C hub if the machine cannot provide enough current; VLC is a reliable app for playing disc video on macOS.
Build and portability: The unit has a slim, matte‑finish plastic housing with a built‑in cable and a low‑profile pop‑out button for disc ejection. Its lightweight design slips easily into laptop bags or backpacks, making it handy for travel, office, and home use.
Operation and troubleshooting: The drive incorporates error‑correction and anti‑shock features to improve read/write stability. If a disc isn’t recognized, try a different standard CD/DVD, restart the computer and connect to a direct port. An indicator LED shows activity; if the LED is on but no drive icon appears, that often indicates insufficient USB power—use a powered port or hub and keep the laptop plugged into AC when burning discs.
What’s in the box: The optical drive with an integrated cable, instruction leaflet and a small eject tool (if included by the manufacturer). The housing is a durable matte plastic shell designed to be thin and pocketable for everyday carry.

Dependable and straightforward
No extra software required and it’s very reliable. It isn’t the fastest drive I’ve seen, but for steady performance it’s excellent.

Surprisingly capable for data-heavy discs
Primarily bought to read medical CDs with large data and it worked beautifully. Compact size fits with my records folder and there’s no software to install—just plug in and go. Reads like an internal drive; promising for the price.

Bought this because my new laptop lacks a drive. Needed to rip my CD collection and it handled the job with no fuss. Easy to use and stores away when not needed—now all my music is accessible on my computer.

Sturdy and works flawlessly on my MacBook Air
Very nice external drive for my MacBook Air. It was truly plug-and-play: insert a music or movie disc and the drive spins up while macOS opens the right app. I’ve used it almost every day for years and it still works fine.

Windows 11 driver issue (resolved)
At first it wouldn’t connect to my Lenovo T16 on Windows 11; Device Manager showed an error where cdrom.sys didn’t load due to a LowerFilters entry (PxHlpa64). Removing that registry LowerFilters value and rebooting let cdrom.sys work and the drive functioned normally.

Gets the job done
Does what the product says. Only oddity is it sometimes isn’t detected until you begin burning, when the drive name appears.

Didn’t work with my Linux setup
Although the box claims Linux support, it failed on my Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. Support confirmed it isn’t compatible with that release. Also wish the cable were longer for elevated laptop setups.

Meets my expectations
I plugged it into my laptop since there’s no built-in drive. Overall I am satisfied with the result and think it’s a good value.
