Extra-Wide Metal Squirrel-Resistant Hanging Bird Feeder (11.8")
Product description
Design and purpose: This hanging bird feeder is built with a solid metal cage featuring 1.6-inch mesh openings intended to keep squirrels out while permitting small birds such as sparrows, finches and many bluebirds to access the food. The extra-wide 11.8-inch diameter gives more interior space so small birds can perch and feed comfortably.
Construction and materials: Constructed from heavy-duty metal, the feeder is made to resist chewing and general outdoor wear. The top has a rain-deflecting cover to shield seed from moisture, and a sturdy hanging loop allows easy suspension from branches or hooks. The finish helps the feeder withstand wind and snowy conditions.
Refilling and cleaning: The lid is removable for straightforward refills of nyjer, thistle or mixed seed and for routine rinsing. A bottom tray collects spilled seed and gives small birds a stable place to land. Drainage holes in the base keep seed from sitting in water so the feeder can remain outdoors through rainy periods.
Use and gifting: Ideal for sitting on a balcony, porch or in a garden, it attracts a range of small songbirds while discouraging squirrels and many larger birds. The unit is sold ready to use and makes a handy gift for those who enjoy backyard birdwatching.
Pros
- Sturdy metal build resists squirrel chewing
- Wide 11.8" cage allows comfortable perching
- Removable top and drainage holes for easy upkeep
Cons
- Very clever larger birds can sometimes access seed
- Openings may be too small for some species
- Could use additional drainage points
VerdictA robust, metal hanging feeder built to exclude squirrels while attracting finches, sparrows and other small songbirds. The roomy 11.8" cage and 1.6" openings favor small species but still allow some medium-sized birds like cardinals when they can reach. Easy to refill and clean thanks to a removable lid, and drainage holes help preserve seed in wet weather. Great durability for outdoor use though

Keeps squirrels off my balcony feeders
After trying other designs, this is the first that blocks squirrels from leaping over my railing. Finches, nuthatches, chickadees and juncos use it constantly. I still add a baffle to deter squirrels from hanging on, but the top keeps seed dry and the tray reduces mess on my deck.

Mostly finches use it
Finches frequent this feeder, but cardinals and many larger songbirds can’t fit through the cage as shown. It is squirrel-proof, but don’t count on larger species like cardinals or bluebirds to enter if openings are too small.

Works well but add more drainage
Overall a solid feeder, though I wish the base had extra drainage holes to clear water faster.

Not jay-proof for suet cakes
No squirrels here, but scrub jays can push their heads through about a 1.5" opening and can polish off a suet cake quickly. On the plus side, all the birds seem to enjoy the suet.

Thieves other than squirrels
Squirrels were deterred, but grackles learned to cling to the side and pull seed through the gaps. Smaller birds joined in once they figured it out. Filling and cleaning are easy, but slightly taller/wider openings would broaden the bird variety.

Bought multiple — very pleased
I own several of these and have gifted them too. Bluebirds visit regularly and the feeder stores weeks of mealworms without daily refills. The wide cage prevents starlings and blackbirds from reaching the food, and it’s simple to refill and rinse clean. Very versatile and attractive—works with many seed types.

Fantastic for tiny songbirds
Chickadees and house finches love it. Even in strong winds they cling inside to feed. It’s easy to fill with safflower seed, wastes less thanks to the platform, and nearby cardinals scoop up any fallen seed. I ordered extras for myself and a relative.

Good for cardinals and buntings
I’ve used caged feeders for years and this one stands out. The openings are roomy enough for cardinals and Painted Buntings, yet still exclude many larger nuisance birds. It’s shorter than my other feeders but holds the same amount and offers ample perching space. I’ll be buying more.
