First Alert/BRK Talking Hardwired Combination Smoke & CO Alarm (SC7010BV)
Product description
The SC7010BV is a hardwired combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that announces both the hazard type and the approximate location within the home. It comes with a mounting plate and installation guide and is designed to fit standard electrical boxes for ceiling or wall installation. The housing is molded plastic in a white finish and has a low-profile profile to blend with typical ceilings.
Sensing is handled by a photoelectric smoke chamber tuned for larger particles associated with smoldering fires and an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor for reliable CO detection. The unit supports voice alerts and can identify up to 11 preprogrammed zones so occupants hear both the danger and its origin. A single multi-function button performs silence, test, and functional checks.
The alarm hardwires to household power and includes a battery backup accessed through an easy side battery door so batteries can be changed without removing the unit from its mounting. Devices of this type meet applicable UL safety standards and carry a limited 10-year warranty; an end-of-life chirp notifies you when the unit should be replaced.
Pros
- Clear spoken alerts identify hazard type and location
- Photoelectric smoke plus electrochemical CO sensing reduces false alarms
- Hardwired with battery backup and simple side-access battery door
Cons
- Only the initiating unit will always provide the spoken message in mixed systems
- Room-name options are limited to preset choices
- May require adapter or connector changes when swapping different brands
VerdictThis SC7010BV model provides clear spoken alerts that identify whether the hazard is smoke or carbon monoxide and where it’s coming from using up to 11 preprogrammed locations. The photoelectric smoke sensing element reduces nuisance triggers from steam or cooking, while an electrochemical CO sensor improves carbon monoxide detection accuracy. Units can be tied together so all alarms sound on dete

Very loud unit — nuisance alarms were a problem in my home
These alarms are extremely loud and easy to locate by the red light. However, in a dusty environment I experienced repeated nuisance trips; several units alarmed from airborne dust alone. There’s a silence function that mutes all interconnected alarms if needed. I recommend replacing the default batteries promptly and be cautious if your home has heavy dust or particulates — I ended up removing some after multiple false alarms.

Replaced wired First Alert system quickly and cleanly
I used the existing house wiring and swapped six rooms in under an hour. The new mounting plates lined up with the old screw positions and the connector fit the existing harness. You select a preset audio label per room so the alarm calls out the location during an event; system testing triggers all interconnected units together. It also reports measured CO levels, which I found useful during setup.

Solid dual-function alarm — remember to replace old units every 10 years
I swapped out my end-of-life CO unit with this combination model. I keep these tested yearly with a commercial detector spray. CO can rise toward the ceiling, so installing the sensor high makes sense. I appreciate the spoken announcement and the very loud horn — it will wake sleepers. You can choose a preset room label so the alarm tells you where the problem is, though the list is basic. Programming takes a minute and the manual is helpful if you fumble it the first time. The backup batteries pop into a side compartment for easy replacement; I swapped in fresher alkalines out of habit.

Reliable, easy to install detector with typical tradeoffs
This BRK/First Alert combination alarm is straightforward to mount and can run on household wiring with battery backup. It’s loud and can be interconnected with other alarms. There’s a low-battery indicator and a mute/silence function. Some users report limited battery life and occasional nuisance alarms, and the preset room list isn’t customizable. Overall it’s a dependable choice for those seeking a simple install and spoken alerts.

Only the alarm that starts the event will voice-annunciate
With interconnected detectors, the unit that first detects smoke or CO will announce whether it’s smoke or CO. If a non-talking alarm elsewhere starts the chain, the talking unit will just emit the standard beeps (three for smoke, four for CO) rather than speaking. My previous unit lasted about nine years before failing with chirps and an error on test, so keep track of service life.

Company with recycling efforts; installation tips
I replaced several FireX/Kidde units with First Alert models including this SC7010BV. The brand supports a take-back program for certain old units, which I liked. Swapping units is straightforward — changing the faceplate, plugging in the compatible connector or an adapter, and snapping the new alarm in place took under 10 minutes per device. Be aware you may need pigtail or adapter plugs when replacing other brands, but the overall process was simple and repeatable.

Lower-frequency alerts are easier for aging ears
I’ve been upgrading my home detectors and this model really improves audibility for me. The lower-pitched alarm gets my attention better than older high-frequency tones. I now have six detectors; the verbal messages make it quick to know which one triggered the event. They integrate with older First Alert interconnects without rewiring; I only swapped mounting rings. Older, non-speaking units won’t announce room names, but the system remains compatible.
