Product description

This 8 oz culture contains live Arid Springtails (Pseudosinella violenta), housed in coconut-coir substrate ready to introduce into compatible enclosures. The package is an established culture intended to seed terrariums and isopod bins; the material is predominantly coco coir which helps retain a small, concealed humid pocket.

Pseudosinella violenta are small, pale, and very quick movers — often mistaken for ants at first glance. They specialize as a cleanup crew, grazing on mold, fungus, biofilms, algae, and decaying organic matter. Because of their size, they can also serve as a tiny supplemental prey item for small reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that accept 1–3 mm food.

Care is straightforward but specific: maintain a moisture gradient with a dry surface and a concealed humid refuge beneath bark, leaf litter, or similar cover. They tolerate drier surface conditions but must never be allowed to dry out completely, nor should they sit in standing water. Feed light pinches of specialized springtail food to encourage growth; these cultures are noted for fast reproduction once established.

Practical notes: expect rapid movement and immediate hiding behavior as they settle into cover. Many cultures contain abundant eggs that hatch after arrival, so populations may increase noticeably over days to weeks. These springtails are suited to semi-arid bioactive setups, gecko and reptile enclosures with a moisture pocket, isopod cultures, and anyone needing a robust, dry-tolerant cleanup colony.

Pros

High reproductive rate for fast colony establishment
Tolerant of drier surface conditions with a humid retreat
Efficient at consuming mold, biofilm, and detritus

Cons

Not suitable for completely bone-dry habitats
Very small and quick—will hide out of sight
Requires a concealed humid area and light feeding

VerdictA reliable, high-output cleanup colony for enclosures that stay on the drier side but include a humid retreat. These tiny, pale springtails reproduce quickly and consume mold and detritus, making them excellent for seeding multiple setups—just provide a moisture gradient and occasional food.

Careful packaging and thorough instructions

They survived a hot transit and arrived active — eggs had already hatched and the coco substrate was full of movement. The shipper included a cooling gel pack and a printed care sheet with unboxing tips and what to expect. The culture settled into my terrarium and is already improving substrate cleanliness.

Initial dead adults but eggs revived the culture

My first impression was worry because most adults were inactive, but the supplier explained many eggs are in the mix. Within a few days hatchlings appeared and the colony is establishing. I’ll transfer them into my bioactive tanks once numbers build.

Satisfied repeat customer

They arrived quickly and healthy; enough to boost a 60g frog tank and a couple of isopod enclosures. Substrate was clean and free of mites. I’ll return for more.

Two thriving cultures delivered

I ordered a pair of cultures and both showed large numbers of adults despite hot transit conditions. Each jar included care instructions, which made setup easy for a newcomer. I’ll be buying again.
